A thriller set in space that follows Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) on a mission across an unforgiving solar system to uncover the truth about his missing father and his doomed expedition that now, 30 years later, threatens the universe.
Critical consensus is that this is one of Brad Pitt’s best performances. Mark Kermode in The Guardian described the film: “Shot with widescreen majesty on 35mm, Ad Astra combines sinewy, space-bound sequences – all floating elegance and weightless wonder – with moments of shimmery inner stillness”. With a score by Max Richter, this makes for a big-screen spectacle, even if as Kermode decides, it is ultimately an “A-List B-Movie”.
