Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead was first performed by the Oxford Theatre Guild at the Edinburgh Fringe in August 1966. The subsequent review lead Kenneth Tynan to read the play which Tom Stoppard developed further for its professional debut at The Old Vic in 1967. The play expands upon the exploits of two minor characters from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the courtiers Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. The action of the play takes place mainly “in the wings” of Shakespeare’s, with brief appearances of major characters from Hamlet who enact fragments of the original’s scenes. Between these episodes Rosencrantz & Guildenstern voice their confusion at the progress of events occurring onstage without them and become further bemused by the appearance of the troupe of actors and their enigmatic leader. In turns funny and thought-provoking, this play will form a great part of our 70th Anniversary year.
