This adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic and partly autobiographical tale of an orphaned boy making his way out of poverty and becoming a writer keeps many of the much-loved characters, including Iannucci regular Peter Capaldi as Mr. Micawber, Tilda Swinton as Betsy Trotwood and Ben Whishaw as (much-loathed) Uriah Heep but loses some of their familiar catchphrases.
Peter Bradshaw in The Guardian describes it thus: “Iannucci and co-writer Simon Blackwell are concerned, in their adroit and lighthearted way, to start afresh, to tilt the interpretation a bit, to bring in a diverse cast and to re-emphasise Copperfield’s search not just for happiness but for identity, and specifically his own identity as a writer. They do it with tremendous joie de vivre.”
