June 1940. France is collapsing before the German advance, but one little-known general refuses to accept defeat. Escaping to London with little more than his extraordinary self-belief, Charles de Gaulle sets about persuading Winston Churchill that France is still in the war, while struggling to turn his fledgling Free French movement into a genuine political and military force. Meanwhile, inside occupied France, a new generation begins its own dangerous resistance. Simon Abkarian stars alongside Simon Russell Beale as Churchill in the first part of Antonin Baudry’s sweeping wartime epic, combining political intrigue, dry humour and spectacular battle sequences with the remarkable story of a nation refusing to surrender.
