NT Live Announcement
From the National Theatre Live team
To our valued partners,
Our thoughts are with you during this unpredictable time and we hope you are all keeping well and safe.
The National Theatre will be closed until the 30 June 2020 due to the escalating situation we find ourselves in to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and protect our community. This extended closure means The Welkin will not be performed again at the National Theatre.
It is with regret that we are therefore cancelling the National Theatre Live broadcast of The Welkin on 21 May 2020.
I’m sure you share in our disappointment that we are not to be able to present this fantastic new play on cinema screens. And we apologise for the inconvenience caused during this difficult time.
The National Theatre’s mission is to make theatre for everyone. We mentioned last week that in these challenging times we were investigating ways we can support our fans while many are not able to visit your venues, their local theatres, or the National Theatre. And promised we would update you when we had more news.
We announce the launch of National Theatre At Home, an initiative designed to continue to engage our audiences in their homes during this period of confinement.
As part of this the National Theatre will be releasing one back catalogue National Theatre Live title per week across April and May on the National Theatre YouTube channel. These titles will be free to stream, and be available for one week only. The first four titles are One Man, Two Guvnors, Jane Eyre, Treasure Island, and Twelfth Night.
We have worked hard to create an offer with you, our valued partners, in mind. This free streaming is strictly limited to 7 days per title and we have endeavoured to prioritise titles that have benefitted from theatrical success already.
We see this as an opportunity to raise awareness about filmed live theatre with a wider audience, and will do what we can to welcome them into your venues upon reopening. And we hope this limited online offer might also support your National Theatre Live fans at home in these challenging times.
To reassure you, we are very committed to you and supporting your businesses. We are progressing our plans to extend the rights windows for current titles for a further 6 months to assist your programme for reopening. We will let you know when we have more information.
Please let us know if we can help you with anything further at this difficult time.
Stay well and look after yourselves.
All the best,
National Theatre Live team
