Tom Hanks is Mister Rogers in this film, based on the real-life friendship between Fred Rogers, children’s TV personality whose show Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood [sic] ran for over 30 years, and a journalist from Esquire Magazine, played by Matthew Rhys.
Assigned to write a profile of the much-loved children’s entertainer, the journalist finds his cynicism crumbling in the warmth of the entertainer’s presence.
Nominated for 1 Golden Globe, the film has had 4 star reviews, including from The Guardian: “The cynic-becomes-a-believer arc is age old but it unfolds here without cliche thanks to an emotionally intelligent script from Noah Harpster and Micah Fitzerman-Blue, but mainly because of a marvelous, prickly turn from Rhys”.
