Take a dash of Ealing comedy; stir in a soupcon of contemporary issues such as village pubs forced to close and the ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ phenomenon; season with a stellar cast of much loved household names and the resulting confection? ChickLit, a new independent British comedy.

The pub where four friends meet each week to play dominoes is set to close and the players decide to group write an erotic novel in a slightly quixotic attempt to raise money and save it. When a pair of eccentric literary agents (pitch perfect performances from Eileen Atkins and John Hurt) find the writers a publisher they realise they have a problem – no one is going to read a ‘chick lit’ novel written by four blokes! So they employ an out of work actress to role play the part of the author and all goes well until the successful book is turned into a film and the ‘author’ turns the tables on her hapless employers by starring in it and altering the terms of her deal with them so that they are faced with the prospect of churning out more of the same for the foreseeable future.
