Michael Fassbender stars as Macbeth, with Marion Cottilard as Lady Macbeth in this British film based on Shakespeare’s play and filmed partly in Scotland. The Australian director, famous for the gritty drama Snowtown, brings an epic scale to the story of all-consuming passion and ambition set in war-torn Scotland. According to Peter Bradshaw “This is not the traditional stage Macbeth, crammed into claustrophobic interior spaces. It is conceived in (and almost dwarfed by) a vast Scottish plain” and the film “never entirely quits the battlefield”.
