Noir film based on the novel by William Lindsay Gresham, which was also the basis for the 1947 film starring Tyrone Power. Del Toro has stated that this is a standalone adaptation of Gresham’s novel, as opposed to a remake.

A carnival worker learns how to deceive people from a clairvoyant and reinvents himself as a psychic for the wealthy of Chicago. When he hooks up with a female psychologist, she turns out to be running a scam of her own.
