It’s a Saturday afternoon in summer and an important local cricket match is underway. But while the team captain is trying to keep his men focused on the game, there is slow-burning meltdown among their wives and girlfriends in the kitchen.
Richard Harris’s cricketing comedy Outside Edge is more to do with marital disharmony in the pavilion where tea is being prepared than scoring runs on the pitch. Tension, back-biting and witty one-liners eventually leads to chaos and reminds us of the maxim “What goes on tour stays on tour”.
Written in 1979, this play is now seen as one of the classic comedies of the late 20th century. It involves genuine characters, acutely observed, in a typical middle-England situation in which things unravel with hilarious results.
