★★★★ “Fiennes is unassumingly tremendous”: The Telegraph
Fiennes shines in this gentle comedy drama, written by Alan Bennett and Nicholas Hytner (Lady in a Van, The History Boys). It’s 1916 and, amid war and loss, a Yorkshire village finds hope – and defiance – in music, under a mysterious new choirmaster, when the local choral society recruits a group of teenage boys and girls to replace all the men who have enlisted to help the war effort. They work towards a performance of Edward Elgar’s ‘The Dream of Gerontius’ under the direction of the demanding Dr Guthrie (Fiennes).
Starring Ralph Fiennes, Roger Allam, Mark Addy, Alun Armstrong, Robert Emms, and Simon Russell Beale. Directed by Nicholas Hytner and written by Alan Bennett.
